Some of you may have notice my absence (and some of these may have rejoiced), but I have returned from Moab with a renewed appreciation for the "Wonders of Nature down by the riverside". The boys were a constant companion on this trip and provided the perfect background music for a truly wonderful adventure. I've included some pics for those who care and I'll be getting back on the bus here soon enough (sorry, but I promise to sit in the back for awhile)

I'm guessing Canyonlands? Brother...I'm SOOOOO F'N JEALOUS!!!! First (& only) trip there (Arches & Zion actually) was solo backpacking trip the fall of '99. I arrived in Grand Junction after dark, and driving out towards Moab the next morning (after the obligitory vacation wake & bake) and seeing the "high" desert for the first time it was like I was home.

In Arches I spent the night camped on the lip of a pour-off into Lost Spring Canyon. The next morning was to be one of the most special moments of my life. Before the sunrise & after yet another wake & bake, I was sitting on the edge of the pour-off w/feet dangling over the edge, and I realized I could hear my heartbeat, the air moving in & out of my lungs, and I could hear air moving over my ears but I COULD NOT feel any air moving on my skin----it was THAT quiet! The old saying that "the silence was deafening" was true. Normally there's the noise of a plane, or traffic in the distance, or the hum of an air conditioning unit, or a dog barking, or birds chirping---there's SOME bit of noise somewhere to be heard. But this particular morning I heard absolutely NOTHING! This was definitely "strange & unusual occurances in the desert".

I hope to get out there next year sometime---I want to try the Maze district for a week.

White Rim Trail in the Islands In The Sky. A holy place to be sure. Have also spent time in Arches and can say the same thing. I don't know anyone who has spent a few days in those places and not come out a little changed.

I'd say "changed" is an understatement.

Welcome home! Even the text in your post has that "fresh feeling" to it. Any unusual occurrences in the desert?

Not "unusual" so to speak, but the most memorable was one night we spent sleeping outside looking up at the most immense night sky I've ever seen while Dark Side of the Moon played sofly in the background (that was the one thing we could all agree on) after sampling a little of the green for the first time in years. Incredible.

Good to have you back, Patrick. That looks like an incredible landscape - were you checked in to the Mars Hotel?

So, how did the malt taste up there?

A tad warm, but smooth as silk going down with a very nice finish. Your name was included in the first toast (and maybe others, but I'm a little bit hazy on the details)

Wow, man, I'm deeply touched that you took the time to raise a glass in my direction. I'm glad to have been with you in at least one kind of spirit.
